A regular couple looking for a change:
Recently there has been a surge in interest among Americans looking to move abroad. Whether you’re feeling uneasy because of the increasingly tense political climate, the stifling cost of living, or you’re simply looking for a change in lifestyle, you’re not alone!
Our Story
When we decided to take the plunge and explore what it might look like for us to start a new life abroad, we found that while there is a lot of information overall, much of it was from the perspective of full-time travelers and existing expats and was often geared towards retirees or younger folks solo traveling. There was a definite blindspot when looking for information specific to our lives as people who have worked traditional in-office jobs as employees and would need to figure out how to relocate not only ourselves, but two 60 lb. pups potentially across oceans to our new home.
This inspired us to document our progress and share it with you all to share our experience and hopefully give some guidance and insight into what it takes to uproot your life and start again in a new country. While we don’t intend to give a step-by-step guide through the process, we hope that seeing our struggles and successes can inspire, reassure, and provide direction to you while you forge your own path in the expat journey.
Remember that everyone’s story is different. Your wants and needs in your new country may be different from ours and that’s ok! What we share comes directly from our own experience, and while what we want or choose to do may be different from you, we hope that our lessons learned can help guide and inform you on your own adventure.
Sarah
- Hi there! I grew up in Colorado with a beach-loving heart, currently dreaming about a new chapter abroad with my husband Greg and our two dogs. I’ve grown to appreciate the beauty of Colorado—its seasons, its mountains, and the life we’ve built here—but I’ll admit, the long, cold winters have me daydreaming of sunny shores.
- Some of my favorite memories come from the couple of years I lived in California as a kid, spending slow, sunny days with my mom and grandma. That time left an imprint on me—the sound of waves, the salty air, the slower pace—and I’ve missed it ever since.
- I went to college in snowy Flagstaff, Arizona, then returned home to Colorado where life unfolded pretty traditionally: moved in with Greg (my high school sweetheart), started a career, bought a house, got married, and filled our home with love and fur.
- Now, we’re thinking about shaking things up—exploring life beyond the familiar, seeing what the world has to offer, and maybe, just maybe, finding our way back to the beach.Description for this block. Greg
- I grew up near Denver, Colorado. While I never learned to ski, I love a snowy day at one of the mountains’ numerous hot springs!
- As a kid I always imagined living somewhere with constant warm weather and beaches, but as I’ve aged I’ve learned to appreciate the variety of seasons..
- I like playing sports outside (specifically tennis, pickleball, and riding my bike) and watching them on TV, but also love lounging on the couch with Sarah and the dogs in the winter.
- I wanted to move abroad to find a simpler, less stressful life and to really experience another way to live.
The Pups:
Woof-woof! I’m Cookie
- I’m a 13 year old border collie mix!
- I was adopted by Sarah in Colorado but lived in Arizona for three years with her while we went to college!
- I’m known to be a little grumpy and sassy but love to get scratchies and snacks.
- I love searching the floor for any lost food and will always check my sister’s bowl for crumbs after a meal!
Hiii, I’m Nilla!
- I’m the newest member of the family, a 7 year old german shepard!
- I’m best known for my big smile and eagerness to meet new people.
- I love having my head in the clouds and floating through life carefree.
- I can’t get enough of playtime but I’m learning how to relax and cuddle with my sister and my people!
