How to Declutter for Moving Abroad – The Saga Begins…

The Struggle with Stuff

As someone who’s always wrestled with organization, the idea of how to declutter for a potential international move feels… daunting. I’ve always been a collector — of rocks, vintage books, family art, and quirky treasures that fill every nook of our home.

From fabric passed down by my mom and grandma, to sewing notions from thrift stores and my great aunt, my creative space is packed with possibility. I’ve even collected old patterns and made jewelry for over 20 years. Add in my growing painting supplies — acrylics, oils, watercolors — and the question becomes:

What am I going to do with all this stuff?

The Wake-Up Call: Researching Shipping Costs

Once Greg and I started seriously discussing our dream of moving abroad in 2026, reality set in. A little research into international shipping costs made it clear: not everything can (or should) come with us.

So now I’m faced with a choice — use it, gift it, donate it, or store it. Because so many of these items are deeply personal, I’ve decided to follow the KonMari Method, especially when it comes to my sentimental collections.

Why the KonMari Method Resonates

Years ago, I read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo when I was dabbling in minimalist wardrobe living. Her method struck a chord with me, because it’s not just about tossing things — it’s about honoring the emotional value of our belongings.

Here’s a quick overview of how her process works:

  1. Tidy All at Once – not little by little
  2. Tidy by Category – not by room
  3. Follow the Order:
    • Clothes
    • Books
    • Papers
    • Komono (miscellaneous)
    • Sentimental items
  4. Keep Only What Sparks Joy
  5. Respect Your Belongings

Taking Our Time Downsizing (And That’s Okay)

We’re not rushing this. With a tentative move goal of 2026, we’re still very much in our home — which means keeping everyday essentials like kitchen tools and furniture.

When we bought this house, I thought we’d stay maybe five years… here we are, nearly ten years later! Just this year, we finally finished our basement remodel — a two-year labor of love.

We:

Removed a soffit and raised the ceiling

  • Installed LVP flooring
  • Added crown molding
  • Painted (a lot)

It’s now our cozy summer hangout and TV space — and my office has officially moved downstairs too, giving me space to create again!

My Wardrobe (A Love Story)

Let’s talk clothes. I am a thrift lover through and through. As someone who didn’t have much of a clothing budget growing up, discovering thrift stores was a total game-changer — and, well, I got a little carried away.

I love unique pieces, and I try everything on before buying. But let’s be honest: there are only so many days in a year to wear everything.

Lately, I’ve shifted my focus. I’m transitioning away from synthetic fabrics and only bringing home:

  • Natural fibers (cotton, linen, silk)
  • Well-made wardrobe staples
  • Items that replace something worn or outdated

Of course, I still have a few vintage pieces that are staying regardless of material.

Reconnecting with Sewing

Since I already have so many sewing supplies, I’ve started sewing again! My goal is to create pieces I love in high-quality fabrics that will last longer and feel better.

So far in the last month, I’ve made:

  • A pair of lounge pants (comfy but could use some tweaks)
  • Super soft boxer-style shorts

Next up: filling the gaps in my natural fiber wardrobe.

Starting with Clothing: Let the Decluttering Begin

So where am I starting?

Clothing. According to KonMari, it’s the first category — and probably the most overdue for me. This means shoes, accessories, and maybe even hats I haven’t worn in years (but love to look at).

Stay tuned here — and on our YouTube vlog — for updates as I dive into the world of downsizing with intention, creativity, and just a little bit of emotional resistance.

This is only the beginning — but it already feels lighter.

Have You Used the KonMari Method?

I’d love to hear how it went for you — especially if you’re also downsizing for a move, or just trying to make space for what truly brings you joy.
